This is a 21-hour course. Participants are exposed to a comprehensive survey of restorative justice. Assumptions regarding crime are explored via paradigms of retributive and restorative justice. It highlights current intervention strategies and critical justice issues facing community agencies and public institutions. The role of the victim, offender, mediator, and community are examined to discern retributive/restorative positioning and outcome effectiveness.
Workshop Outcomes
It is expected that at the end of the seminar participants will be able to
- Demonstrate an understanding of restorative justice concepts, principles.
- Work restoratively by recognizing the traumatic impact of crime on victims, communities and offenders.
- Identify connections to and referrals from the Criminal Justice System by applying assessment criteria and procedures for determining appropriateness for restorative mediation.
- Identify several practical strategies for developing active partnerships within the community by managing and facilitating victim-offender mediation.
- Identify core principals of the Youth Criminal Justice Act as they relate to Restorative Justice and as other possible interventions.
